6 things about Google’s lightweight Android Oreo Go

Google has announced the release of Android Go yesterday. Every device shipping with Android 8.1 Oreo and 1GB of RAM or less will come with the Android Go OS config enabled.

  1. Lightweight version of Android – Tuned down version of OS and apps that take up less space for entry-level smartphones.Android Oreo devices with 512MB to 1GB of memory will come with the all the Go optimizations.
    • Operating System: Performance and storage improvements to the OS with data management features and security benefits built-in.
    • Google Apps: A new set of Google apps, designed to be lighter and relevant to the unique needs of people who are coming online for the first time.
    • Google Play Store: A tuned version of the Google Play Store that allows you to download any app, but also highlights the apps designed to work best on your device.

  2. Devices running the entry-level version of Android Oreo will also come with Google Chrome’s data-saver features turned on by default.It uses Google’s servers to transcode Web pages,has built with low-connectivity situations in mind.
  3. Google Play Store will highlight lightweight apps “optimized for your device”
  4. New App Google Go (light weight Google Search app) has a light weight interface that first presents the user with a list of search types.It features search-as-you-type functionality, bilingual searches, and the transcoding of third-party Web pages for faster loading.
  5. New YouTube Go app makes it easy to download videos for offline viewing, as well as preview how much data different quality settings will use.
  6. New Files Go—This is a file manager to check on space usage, pointing out large files, duplicate files, and unused apps to the user.
