While the Bitcoin blockchain is used to track ownership of digital currency (bitcoins), the Ethereum blockchain focuses on running the <strong>programming code of any decentralized application.<\/strong> Ethereum is a programmable blockchain. Rather than give users a set of pre-defined operations (e.g. bitcoin transactions), Ethereum allows users to create their own operations of any complexity they wish.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ether crypto token:<\/strong> In the Ethereum blockchain, instead of mining for bitcoin, miners work to earn <strong><em>Ether<\/em>,<\/strong> a type of crypto token that fuels the network. This protects the Ethereum blockchain from frivolous or malicious computational tasks, like DDoS attacks or infinite loops. The sender of a transaction must pay for each step of the \u201cprogram\u201d they activated, including computation and memory storage. <em>These fees are paid in amounts of Ethereum\u2019s native value-token, ether.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ethereum&#8217;s Smart contract\u00a0<\/strong>refers to code in a Contract Account ex. programs that execute when a transaction is sent to that account. Users can create new contracts by deploying code to the blockchain to describe computer code that can facilitate the <em>exchange of money, content, property, shares, or anything of value<\/em>. When running on the blockchain a smart contract becomes like a self-operating computer program that automatically executes when specific conditions are met. These <strong>\u201cminers\u201d<\/strong> are nodes in the Ethereum network that receive, propagate, verify, and execute transactions. The miners then group the transactions which include many updates to the \u201cstate\u201d of accounts in the Ethereum blockchain into what are called <strong>\u201cblocks\u201d<\/strong>, and miners then compete with one another for <em>their<\/em> block to be the next one to be added to the blockchain. Miners are rewarded with ether for each successful block they mine. However, there could be scenarios where private blockchain or consortium blockchain (among a group of trusted participants) can be deployed. For example, a number of companies in verticals, like banking, are looking to Ethereum as a platform for their own private blockchains.<\/li>\n<li>To get started with Ethereum,here are some of the key tools\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><strong>Geth<\/strong>: This is the Go implementation of an Ethereum node, and is the basis for any interactions with the Ethereum blockchain. Running this locally will allow you to easily interact with the Ethereum blockchain. Read the <a class=\"reference external\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ethereum\/go-ethereum\/wiki\/Building-Ethereum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">go-ethereum installation instructions<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mist<\/strong>: This is the equivalent of a web browser, but for the Ethereum platform. It acts as a user interface to display the accounts and contracts that you interact with. It also allows you to create and interact with contracts in a graphical user interface without ever touching the command line. If you are not a developer and just want to store ether and interact with Ethereum contracts, then Mist is the program to use. Downloads can be found on the <a class=\"reference external\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ethereum\/mist\/releases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mist releases page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ethminer<\/strong>: A standalone miner. This can be used to mine or benchmark a mining set-up. It is compatible with eth, geth, and pyethereum. Check out the <a class=\"reference internal\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ethdocs.org\/en\/latest\/mining.html#mining\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mining<\/a> page for more information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remix &amp; Solidity<\/strong>: Remix is an IDE for the smart contract programming language Solidity and has an integrated debugger and testing environment.
