15 Interesting facts about Kubernetes and cloud-native operations report 2021

Canonical recently conducted a survey to measure the usage of Kubernetes, Cloud-native technologies their goals, benefits, challenges, operators, advanced usage, edge, etc., Detailed report includes responses to 50+ questions from ~1200 respondents and analysis from 7 industry experts(this includes me as well, you can read the report for my commentary). In this post, we take look at 15 Interesting facts about Kubernetes and cloud-native operations report 2021.

#1. Over 77.8 percent of respondents answered they utilize hybrid or multi-clouds for various use cases.

#2. More than 21.4 percent of respondents said they’re in charge of a cluster with more than 500 nodes.

#3 Almost 30 percent of the respondents’ run applications on multiple environments and only 15.7 percent are all in on Kubernetes.

#4. Top 3 cloud-native use cases are deploying or managing Kubernetes-as-a-Service (KaaS), re-architecting a proprietary solution into microservices, and moving the business from a closed-source to an open-source solution.

#5. Nearly 55 percent of respondents think they lack Kubernetes knowledge and experience in-house.

#6. AWS hosts over half of all Kubernetes clusters, followed by Azure (34.5%) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) (24.6 percent).

#7.26 percent of respondents have stated that they’re at least 4 versions behind the latest stable release (1.21)

#8. Favorite distribution for local development remains to be Minikube(32.3 percent) followed by Docker Kubernetes (31.7 percent) and Microk8s (25.6 percent).

#9. Close to 30 percent of respondents have stated that they’re using 1-10 Helm charts in the last 90 days and around 28 percent have said it’s the most preferred way to operating, upgrading, and maintaining software on Kubernetes.

#10.70 percent of respondents states that they’re using community-provided templates / playbooks /scripts / packages.

#11. More than 46.2 percent have stated that Security is the most important concern for the Ops team.

#12. Nearly 22 percent of people think that Kubernetes can make coffee.

#13. Only 37 percent of respondents use stateful applications. This got reduced from the previous year’s CNCF report.

#14. Namespaces (63 percent) have made it to the top in the case of separating applications, followed by Separate clusters and Labels.

#15. Security and compliance is the top priority for Kubernetes at the edge. Leaving aside (36 percent) people, there is a Kubernetes edge use case for the rest.
